Alan Webb, who had the fastest 1500-meter (3:30.54) and mile (3:46.91) times in the world in 2007, Webb_alanstcarlsbad08 will run his first track race of 2008 at the Drake Relays in Des Moines on April 26. A year ago, he ran a virtually solo 3:51.71 at Drake to break Steve Scott’s 25-year-old meet record. That 3:46.91 we mentioned, run in Belgium last summer, broke Scott’s longstanding American record. Webb also ran the world’s second fastest 800 in 2007, a 1:43.84. He was the USA 1500-meter champion in 2008 (3:34.82) and also won the mile at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York in 3:52.94. He was eighth at the World Championships in Osaka in the 1500 in 3:35.69.Webb, who is from Reston, Virginia, made two road race ventures thus far in 2008, both disappointments. After a bout of food poisoning, he weakened and faded to 16th in the USA 8K in New York, and feeling heavy legged, he dropped out of the Carlsbad 5000 in California. Webb’s rivals at Drake with include Steve Sherer, who ran a 3:56 mile indoors this winter, and 2006 NCAA 1500-meter champion Vincent Rono. Webb spoke to reporters last week by teleconference.
