The men's and women's track and field teams headed up to Ithaca, N.Y.,
last Sunday to compete in the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. The
men finished seventh out of eight, while the women finished second only
to Princeton.
On
the women's side, the Tigers finished with 114 points, while the Bears
were only seven points behind with 107. Third went to the Big Red of
Cornell with 100 points, followed by Harvard (46), Penn (45), Columbia
(45), Yale (36) and Dartmouth (34).
Princeton, which picked up
its first title since 1998, ended Cornell's six-year winning streak.
The Bears held off Cornell for the second straight time this season,
although it was not quite enough to capture the Ivy title.
The
Bears ended the indoor season with several strong individual
performances. This week, it was Nicole Burns '09 that lead the way for
the Bears on the track. She picked up several key points with her
first-place finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 55.78 seconds.
She continued her success in the 200-meter, crossing the finish line
second in 25 seconds flat, while teammate Akilah King '08 finished
third in the event.
"My mental capacity to lay it all down on
the track and trust in my training gave me the strength to win the
400-meter," Burns said. "I think my training has gotten me back into
shape, after taking off last outdoor season. I overcame my fears and
did the best I could for my team. It was a very emotional meet for me."
