Steffensen is likely to face a disciplinary hearing and could be charged with misconduct under Athletics Australia's code of conduct.

COMMONWEALTH 400m champion John Steffensen is facing an investigation after he launched an extraordinary verbal attack on 1984 Olympic gold medallist Glynis Nunn-Cearns in front of dozens of young athletes.

The Australian understands Nunn-Cearns has reported the incident to Athletics Australia officials, and is expected to lodge a formal complaint today about Steffensen's behaviour.

Steffensen's tirade which, according to witnesses left Nunn-Cearns visibly distressed, came as he was training at Sydney Olympic Park last Friday.

Nunn-Cearns is on Athletics Australia's track and field selection panel.
