Hughes, Poly eye chance at history - Press-TelegramPublished by
NORWALK - Bryshon Nellum of Poly High became
the first male athlete since 1916 to win four events in the 2007 CIF
State championships when the Gatorade National Athlete of the Year won
the 200 and 400 meters and ran on the Jackrabbits' winning 400- and
1,600-meter relays. It might not take another 91 years for another athlete to equal the
feat. Poly senior Joey Hughes, has an opportunity to complete the same
quadruple as Nellum this weekend in the CIF State meet at Cerritos
College on Friday and Saturday. Hughes, a teammate of Nellum who is now a USC freshman, is the state
leader in the 200 in 21.10 seconds and 46.97 in the 400, and is part of
the Jackrabbit's 400- and 1,600-meter relays that have the state's
second-ranked times at 41.31 and 3:12.68. Hughes will be the catalyst in Poly and Coach Don Norford's bid for
a third state boys' title in a row - a benchmark that's only been
achieved by Jefferson (1949-52), Hawthorne (1983-85 and 1987-89) and
Muir (1994-96). Read the full article at: www.presstelegram.com
