IOC chiefs prepared for deaths on torch relay | NEWS.com.au

Olympic chiefs have made contingency plans to deal with the possibility of protests turning fatal during the 2008 torch relay.

The website of British newspaper The Times said the International Olympic Committee had a confidential memorandum that contained scenarios including incidents where people are hurt or killed during demonstrations in China and cities around the world that are hosting the torch.

It said the IOC, which approved the torch route through Tibet, had prepared response protocols for its 205 national committees.

The torch will be in Tibet next month when it will be taken to the summit of Everest, in what the memo calls a particularly bold segment of the relay.

The report came as a group of foreign reporters yesterday left for Tibet on a tightly controlled trip to cover the Olympic torch's ascent of Everest.

These are the first overseas journalists allowed into the region in a month.
