If grades were handed out to the Boston Athletic Association, Mass. Track and Field Officials, public safety and medical personnel, and assorted volunteers who worked both the U.S. Olympic Trials women’s marathon on Sunday and the 112th Boston Marathon on Monday, a pair of “A-plus” marks would be in order.

Both events went off smoothly. Monday’s race attracted the second-most entrants (25,283), second-largest starting field (22,375), and second-highest number of finishers (21,963) in history. The finish rate of 98 percent might be actually higher, considering many people don’t complete the course until well after the official clocks stop at 4:45 p.m.

Only the 100th race in 1996 had more finishers (35,868). In addition, a record 8,935 women completed the 26-mile, 385-yard trek from Hopkinton to Boston, surpassing the old record of 8,497, also from 1996.
