February brings another celebration of Black History month, and 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Florence Griffith-Joyner, a famous black female track and field star who died too young, at age 38. Runners may be familiar with the name, but may also confuse her with sister-in-law Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Florence Griffith-Joyner married track star Al Joyner, the brother of Jackie Joyner. At a time when performance-enhancing drugs are prominent in athletic news, it is important not only to note Florence's accomplishments but also the controversy surrounding her death. Florence Griffith rose from her roots in the Los Angeles housing projects to win the 200 meter World Championships in 1983, and continued on to earn a silver medal in the same event in 1984. Her performances and long fingernails made her famous. The marriage to Al Joyner didn't slow her down, and with a new surname, she became "Flo-Jo." Success continued through the 1988 Olympics, where she won gold medals in the 100m, 200m and the 4 x 400m relay. Read the full article at: www.syracuse.com
