Kara Goucher, the 10,000-meter bronze medalist at the 2007 World Championships, will compete in the NYRR women’s Mile Friday night at the 101st Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden in New York. In September, she won the Great North Run, a half-marathon from Newcastle to South Shields, England, defeating Paula Radcliffe in 1:06:57 - which would have been an American record if it hadn’t been on a point-to-point course. Her bronze in Osaka, in 32:05.05 in the 10,000, was the first ever by a U.S. woman in that event at those Championships. In 2007, she also set personal bests of 8:34.99 for 3,000 meters and 14:55.02 for 5,000. Last winter, she was third in the 2007 USA Cross Country Championships 8-K. In 2006, she became the second fastest U.S. female 10,000-meter runner in history with a 31:17.12 and placed second to Lauren Fleshman in the 5,000 at the USATF Championships. She won the bronze medal in the 3,000 at the 2006 World Cup. The former Kara Grgas-Wheeler attended the University of Colorado and won the 3,000 and 5,000 at the 2000 NCAA Track & Field Championships outdoors and was the 2000 NCAA Cross Country champion. She and husband Adam Goucher, another University of Colorado alumnus and a World Championships qualifier in the 5,000, live in Portland, Oregon, and are coached by Alberto Salazar. She spoke to reporters on Wednesday in New York.
