The Washington-bound runner ran the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes 36.57 seconds, the National Federation State High School Assn., record. The old standard was 4:38.15 by Alex Kosinski of El Dorado Hills Oak Ridge set last year. Babcock's time is the second-fastest ever by a California schoolgirl. Polly Plumer from Irvine University was faster in 1982, but it was a converted time; she ran the mile, not the 1,600, and she did it in an open meet at UCLA, not a high school-only meet.
