Her pioneering mother once set a marathon world record. Now, Shalane Flanagan might be traveling a path toward the marathon. Flanagan, in her first track race at 10,000 meters, set an American record of 30 minutes, 34.49 seconds Sunday night at Stanford, Calif. It was the fastest time ever run in North American and fastest in the world this year. She broke the mark of 30:52.32 set on the same track by Deena Kastor in 2002. It was Flanagan's third American record in less than 16 months, following the 5,000 meters and indoor 3,000. Flanagan, 26, is the daughter of Indianapolis native Cheryl Treworgy. The former Cheryl Pedlow Bridges set a marathon mark of 2 hours, 49 minutes, 40 seconds in 1971. Flanagan, a North Carolina graduate, ran the 5,000 at the 2004 Olympics and finished eighth at the 2007 World Championships. Read the full article at: www.indystar.com
