EUGENE — The Prefontaine Classic is named after a distance runner, Steve Prefontaine, and the event traditionally has offered scintillating excitement on the track. This year's shot put should draw fans' attention to what's going on inside the track. Meet director Tom Jordan has brought together a small but elite field that includes the top three throwers in the world. The six-man field includes: world champion Reese Hoffa; world No. 2 Adam Nelson, who won the silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics; and Christian Cantwell, ranked No. 3 in the world. Cantwell is this year's world leader, with a throw of 71-4 3/4. Hoffa is next at 70-5 3/4. Nelson has thrown 70-1 3/4. Also in the field is rising star Dorian Scott of Jamaica. Scott, 26, who threw collegiately at Florida State, has uncorked a 70-4 1/2. Other participants at the meet as announced by Jordan: Women's 1,500: Maryam Jamal of Bahrain, the reigning world champion (3:58.75) leads a field that includes four runners who ranked in the top 10 last season.
