Hope to Appeal IOC Decision

WASHINGTON, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Seven female United States track and field Olympic medalists who ran relays with Marion Jones at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, today announced their goal to raise enough money to be able to pursue an appeal of the April 10, 2008 decision of the International Olympic Committee, demanding the return of their Olympic medals.  The appeal process could take several months and there are substantial costs associated with proceeding before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, the tribunal with jurisdiction to hear the appeal.

Andrea Anderson, LaTasha Colander-Clark, Torri Edwards, Chryste Gaines, Monique Hennagan, Jearl Miles-Clark, and Passion Richardson earned Olympic Gold and Bronze medals for the United States in the Women's 4 x 400 and
4 x 100 meter relays at the 2000 Olympic Games.  Ms. Jones was also a part of those relay teams.  In Ms. Jones' October 2007 plea bargain with federal investigators, she agreed to admit to the use of a banned steroid.  She also agreed to surrender her Olympic medals.

On April 10, the IOC admitted that no one has ever suggested that the seven women other than Ms. Jones who competed in the relays in question broke any law or rule of Olympic competition in the 2000 Olympic Games, but the IOC nevertheless disqualified all seven relay athletes based on their affiliation with Ms. Jones at the 2000 Games and ordered the United States Olympic Committee to reclaim their medals.

"It is a sad day for the Olympic movement.  To divert attention from the problems plaguing the Beijing Olympics, the IOC is trying to take medals from innocent Olympic athletes," said LaTasha Colander-Clark, one of the athletes targeted in the IOC's ruling.
